CORY FAMILY REUNION 2001

AT CHILLICOTHE, OHIO

Vice President, Dorothy Rout hosted our annual meeting in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio on June 22 through 24, 2001. Ross County was the home of Harry Harmon Cory who was one of the first to conduct extensive research on Cory/Corey history. A large colony of Cory/Corey families farmed in Ross County, Ohio from early in the 19th century. Dorothy Rout is a niece of  Harry Harmon Cory. An article and biography by Harry Harmon Cory (July 1941) of Joseph Benjamin Cory is enclosed for your reading. A welcome was held in the hospitality room with tours on Saturday and our business meeting and banquet on Sunday.

We visited the Ross County Genealogical Society which is not too far from the Inn.  John Bowdle is the President of the Society and is a Cory cousin.

Frankfort, Ohio, the hometown of Dorothy Rout's grandparents Cory. The house has changed little. The pot-bellied stove no longer heated the living room. It was gone. The home was decorated with such flair of antiques and excellent good taste.

The Presbyterian Church is on one of Frankfort?s main streets. Frankfort is rather small, so there aren?t too many streets at all. They catered a noon meal for the Cory Family Society. This way the Cory?s who live in and around Frankfort could join us and we?d have a high old time together. The young lady in charge was a Cory relative!!  The cost was $7.50 and included a salad buffet, angel food cake with strawberries and drinks.

We stopped at Frankfort?s Greenlawn cemetery. Many Cory?s are buried here. Copies of the cemetery layout were passed out, click here. Also a list of plots at the ??? Cemetery and a map of the Old Baptist Cemetery.

We drove to the Westfall road where the Cory farms were at one time. ?Where the sun rose in the morning and set in the evening.? It truly was a Cory valley. Went to a farm home of Dorothy Rout's grandfather Cory. If you have a copy of the Book ?The Cory Family? by Harry Harmon Cory and look on Page 82 you will see the old homestead built in 1839. The John Cory?s bought the house when grandmother and grandfather moved into Frankfort (sometime in the late 1920?s or 1930?s). The John Cory?s enclosed it plus modernized it. (Several years ago John passed away and we drove to Frankfort then went to the funeral home). We spent much of the afternoon at Mound City the prehistoric Indian site (200 BC to 500 AD).
