88. Thomas Cory
was born about 1622 in Harpole Parish, Northampton, England. He was
christened on 16 Nov 1622 in Harpole Parish, Northampton, England.
He died on 2 May 1706 in Watertown, Middlesex Co, MA.
Through DNA analysis, it has been shown that Thomas is related to current residences
of Harpole, Northampton, England. Harpole is a small village that has had a
long list of Cory families. In the records of the Harpole Parish, Northampton,
we find a Thomas Cory that may well be this person. The birth date of circa
1622 is taken from the Christening records of the parish and he as been attached
to that family. This fact has not been proven and so should be view as only
a tentative connection to the Harpole Corys.
He was in Charleston, Suffolk Co, MA as early as 1658. How or when he came
to America is not known. He is first heard of at Chelmsford, Middlesex Co, MA
where his name appears on Chelmsford's oldest tax list in 1671, for the payment
of 12 shillings for the Townes engagment to the minister. He was a solder in
the King Phillips War, 1675-1676. He worked as a blacksmith in Chelmsford.
Other information says that he and his brother John, set sail form Devonshire,
England in 1657/58? They landed a Charleston, MA. In 1662 they were granted
land by the Crown in Chelmsford, MA. John Cory moved to RI or CT and started
his family.
There are some records that have him near Boston as early as 1644. This is most
likely the adopted son of Giles Cory, Thomas Rich, the son of Martha Penyor and
her first husband Henry Rich, his third wife. He was a mulatto and worked to
clear his mother's name after the Salem Witch trials.
Thomas Cory and Abigail Gould were married on 19 Sep 1665 in Chelmsford, Middlesex
Co, MA. Abigail Gould (daughter of Francis
Gould and Rose) was born on 18 Feb 1648/49 in Braintree, Nofolk Co, MA.
She died in Jan 1718/19 in Littleton, Middlesex Co, MA. She was
a teacher. Thomas Cory and Abigail Gould had the following children:

He is listed twice in Corys of America, in Book 4 and Book5. In Book5, his
birth date is given as Jan 1679/80(?). He died on 15 Nov 1747 in Chelmsford,

his death date is given as abt 1730(?) in Roxbury, Suffolk Co, MA. He signed
a will. The inventory of his will is dated 19-Nov-1730. He lived
