Fifth Generation

150. Joseph Cory1 was born on 10 Sep 1737 in Elizabethtown, Essex Co, NJ. He died about 1785 in Frankfort, Ross Co, OH. Joseph inherited a part of his fathers large estate at New Providence, NJ, on which he lived until after the birth of son Stephen (the fourth child). He then left New Jersey, crossed the Allegheny, and for about fifteen years lived in Virginia, now Brooke and Hancock Co's West
Virginia.

In 1790 a colony of 27 persons (including Joseph and family) built a Pirogue (canoe) over 60 feet long, made from the trunk of a tree. The group paddled down the Ohio River locating in Kentucky, where most of them stayed.

In 1797 Joseph's family and others crossed the Ohio River, and migrated to Ross Co, OH. Joseph built his home near Frankfort, OH. The old Cory farm was still owned by the descendants in 1920.

Joseph enlisted in the first regiment of Essex County NJ as a private, he was wounded June 23, 1780.

This information may be found on page 555 of Stryker's register of men in the revolution. Note of interest there are ten members of the New Jersey Cory Family mentioned in that register.
