Fifth Generation

289. Gideon Cory1 was born on 21 Mar 1757 in East Greenwich, Kent Co, RI. He died on 14 Jul 1822 in New Canaan, Queens Co, NB, CND. Large numbers of English speaking colonist, called "loyalists" because they wished to remain faithful to the British Crown, sought refuge in Canada after the United States won it's independence. They settled mainly in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and along the Great Lakes.

After the signing of the North American Treaty of Versailles in 1783, the Constitutional Act of British North America, set forth the intention of the King to divide the Province of Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. Since 1783, the Colony of Nova Scotia has divided in two; the north side of the Bay of Fundy became New Brunswick. Cape Breton was a separate colony until 1788, when it became part of the Province of Nova Scotia.

On May 18, 1783, Gideon Cory arrived on the British transport ship Union. The Union traveled from Rhode Island to Parrtown, now Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Whether his wife, Abigail Clarke, came at the same time is in question. One record says that she was born in Rhode Island another says Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Gideon, cooper by trade, militiaman in war, and United Empire Loyalist by choice settled in Hempstead near Gagetown. In 1793 Gideon, wife Abigail and their children moved to New Canaan where he farmed, taught night school, and raised his family.

Gideon Corey, as he was now known, was one of eighteen signers of a communication dated 16 January 1802 that was sent to Edward Winslow, then a member of the council of New Brunswick. The petition urged the government to accept the current survey of lots in the New Canaan settlement and to issue grants to settlers. The New Canaan lots were about 300 acres running north and south across the Canaan River. They stretched from Salisbury to Coles Island in the Counties of Westmorland, Kings, and Queens.

On October 2, 1809, Grant #510 conveyed lots #9 and #10, as surveyed, to Gideon Corey.

Gideon Cory and Abigail Clarke were married about 1783 in North Kingstown, Washington Co, RI (Now Wickford). Abigail Clarke1 (daughter of Elisha Clarke and Desire Gardner) was born about 1766 in Cornwallis, NS, CND. She died on 29 Apr 1849 in Petitcodiac, Westmorland Co, NB, CND. She was buried in New Canaan, Queens Co, NB, CND. Abigail Clarke was a descendent of John Clark, MD wi is described in the Baptist Encyclopedia as teh father of the North American Baptist.
