He was a house carpenter, miller (i 2 CONC n 1657), proprietor of a public house, and Captain of militia. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was married to Mary Earle about 1656. The listed birthdates of their c 2 CONC hildren are quite difficult to reconcile as a logical progression. 2 CONT 2 CONT William resided in Portsmouth, RI. The first record we have of him was, D 2 CONC ecember 10, 1657. On December 10, 1657, he received a grant of 8 acres o 2 CONC f land from his paternal grandmother, Ann Wauker Correy Roome. 2 CONT 2 CONT In May of 1658 he was given another large grant of land. May 18 1658 Wi 2 CONC lliam was made a freeman. 2 CONT 2 CONT On Oct. 28, 1662, he let or hired out his now dwelling house, with fenc 2 CONC ed land, to Peter Folger of Newport, for five years with conditions for i 2 CONC mproving the farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT Unusually, William, accompanied by his brother in law, William Earle re 2 CONC turned to Bristol on a visit in 1669/70 to claim property deeded to him b 2 CONC y his grandmother. An entry in the first volume of the Colony Records f 2 CONC or 28th February 1667, recorded that Ann Roome, widow of John Roome of P 2 CONC ortsmouth, Rhode Island had deeded to William Corrie of Portsmouth "for c 2 CONC onsideration of full and just satisfaction and true payment by mee in h 2 CONC and Received from 'William Corrie of Portsmouth, house carpenter, deede 2 CONC d to him' two certain mansion houses with the lands thereto belonging . . . i 2 CONC n St James Parish in the street called St. James back in the Citty of B 2 CONC ristol, in Old England" which had been left to her by her late husband [ 2 CONC John Correy] and by him "put into the hands and care of Mr. Thomas fflo 2 CONC yd [sic] of Bristol." 2 CONT 2 CONT On 18 October 1667 she gave to him a commemoratory deed, and immediatel 2 CONC y gave to him another document (both recorded R.I. [Archive MS 0020 9], 2 2 CONC :354, Rhode Island Colony Records 1646 to 1669) stating that: 2 CONT 2 CONT "William Correy, being of aged about fower and thirtye yeares being no 2 CONC w personally present and intending a voyage to England upon occasion of d 2 CONC emanding and Receiving the Estate that his grandmother, Ann Roome hath m 2 CONC ade sale and surrender of unto him by the written deed: I say this cert 2 CONC ifieth that the bearer here of William Correy aforesaid is the reputed s 2 CONC on of one John Correy deceased who was somtime inhabitant in or near th 2 CONC e city of Bristol in England and son of Ann Roome aforenamed: and furth 2 CONC er this certifieth that the said William Correy i s bound for England i 2 CONC n company with one William Earll inhabitant of t he same town of Portsm 2 CONC outh on Rhode Island and the aforesaid William Earll may be able to tes 2 CONC tifie in England and to the parson that shall ther Exhibett these presa 2 CONC ntes whether hee be the same to whome they are now committed and in who 2 CONC se behalfe these lines are written . . . Joseph Torrey recorder." 2 CONT 2 CONT On Dec. 4, 1669, he had a deed of a third of a share in Dartmouth from W 2 CONC illiam Earle. And on that same date he was made a freeman. 2 CONT 2 CONT No records have come to light in Bristol to confirm the success or othe 2 CONC rwise fo the 1669 prilgrimage 2 CONT 2 CONT On 4 April 1676 he and three others, were appointed to have the care an 2 CONC d disposing of one barrel of powder for the town and two great guns tha 2 CONC t were in the yard of the late deceased William Benton. They were to be c 2 CONC arried to Portsmouth and placed, one on Ferry Neck and one near house o 2 CONC f John Borden. The above committee causing said guns to be set on carri 2 CONC ages and fitted for service. 24 August 1676 he was a member of the cour 2 CONC t martial held in Newport for the trial of certain Indians. 2 CONT 2 CONT William Earle was William Correy's brother-in-law. Along with William E 2 CONC arle in 1688 they built a windmill on Briggs hill. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was given one third of Portsmouth, Rhode Island on 7 January 1671. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was a journeyman 4 April 1676. 2 CONT 2 CONT He and three others were appointed "To have the care and disposing o f o 2 CONC ne barrel of gunpowder for the town and the towns' great guns that are n 2 CONC ow in place on Ferry Creek and one near the house of John Borden. No documentary evidenc e has b 2 CONC een found as of this date to prove the supposition that the three Johns a 2 CONC re actually one and the same. One disparity is that John of Southold wa 2 CONC s a weaver rather than a sailor.
